Our Hiflier column will feature the success stories of students who have done extraordinarily well in their after school activities. We will be featuring the interviews with these students.....covering their route to success and also their experiences and tips to other students.....and Oh ....these interviews have been done by members of our team of volunteers....this column will feature the hiflier interviews for one week after which they will be moved to the 'hall of fame'!!!....

Hiflier of the week

Science- Solar Light Assisted nanoZnO Photo Catalytic Mineralization- The Green Technique for the Degradation of Detergents.

Name: Srishti Asthana

Areas of Excellence: Science

Class: XI standard student from Millenium School, Mohali in Punjab

Srishti Asthana, daughter of Punjab IGP S.K. Asthana, named among the top 15 finalists in Google Science Fair 2013. She is a XI standard student from Millenium School, Mohali in Punjab. She made it to the final level of the Google Science Fair, 2013. Her project on a Green way to degrade detergents in waste water beat out more than 1000 competitors in the 15 to 16 years age group from 120 countries. Her topic is Solar Light Assisted nanoZnO Photo Catalytic Mineralization- The Green Technique for the Degradation of Detergents.

She has shared her exciting journey in the field of Science for all of you @ Scooldudes.
Describe your field of excellence
My field of excellence is science. According to me, the beauty of this vast field lies in the fact that it never defies logic.
Who was the first to recognize your talent in Science?
I think the first person to recognize my interest in science was my father. When I was young he would explain to me the various natural phenomena happening around us. Later on, I realized that these were the basic concepts of science.
Tell us about your Project - ‘Solar Light Assisted nanoZnO Photo Catalytic Mineralisation – a Green Technique for the Degradation of Detergents’?
My project ¨Solar Light Assisted NanoZnO Photocatalytic Mineralization - A Green Technique for the Degradation of Detergents¨ deals with treating detergent contaminated water through a green method. It involves no pollution, less costs, less exposure for workers and less equipment.
What motivated you to choose this project?
On a visit to a textile industry in Ludhiana, I saw the atrocious state of dye water pollution. I asked the owner whether he treats this water before it leaves the industry and his answer was, do you treat the detergent water that leaves your houses? That was the point where it occurred to me that detergents cause a lot of pollution worldwide and something needs to be done about stopping or minimizing this pollution.
How do you juggle your time between studies and your passion?
Whatever I am today is because of my studies and the values I have inherited from my parents. Studies are my passion and therefore I do not need to juggle my time between studies and my passion.
What is your ambition in life?
My ambition in life is to pursue a career in pure sciences and go on do research in various other fields.
What are the unforgettable moments in your life?
I think the unforgettable moment of my life was when the 15 Global Finalists of Google Science Fair 2013 were announced and I was one of them. It is unforgettable because it was totally unexpected.
Unlike many students who spend their time watching cartoon and playing, you are thoroughly engaged in Science. Do you ever feel you are not enjoying life?
As I said that science is my passion so I never feel that I am not enjoying life. I am a Kathak dancer so if I get too stressed or need to take a break I dance. Moreover I am surrounded by wonderful parents, an amazing younger sister, supportive teachers and great friends who never let me feel that I am not enjoying life.
What are your other interests?
My other interests are dancing, swimming, cycling and spending quality time with my family and friends.
Thank you Srishti Asthana!
The team @ Scooldudes wishes her all the very best for her future endeavors.
